How to Prepare Your iPhone Before Selling It

Selling your iPhone is a great way to put cash in your pocket — but a few minutes of prep protects your data and can even improve your offer.

1. Back everything up

Before you do anything, back up your iPhone to iCloud or to a Mac so your photos, messages, and apps transfer to your next device.

2. Sign out of iCloud and Apple ID

Go to Settings → your name → Sign Out. This removes the device from your account and disables Activation Lock so the next owner can use it.

3. Unpair your Apple Watch

If you wear an Apple Watch, unpair it from the Watch app first so it backs up and disconnects cleanly.

4. Erase all content

Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Confirm and let it wipe.

5. Remove the case and SIM

Take off the case and pop out the SIM card (unless your carrier asks you to leave it).
